Mine Manager

Job Description

To be accountable for the optimal exploitation of the PGM ore reserve. To be responsible and accountable for the safe, efficient, and cost-effective mining of ore and waste in accordance with approved mine plans and Zimbabwean mining regulations. The role holder ensures that contracted mining operations deliver the required tonnage and grade, on schedule, within budget, while maintaining compliance with all safety, environmental, and statutory obligations.

Duties and Responsibilities

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

Production Delivery

Deliver ore and waste tonnes in line with short- and medium-term mine plans developed by Technical Services.
Ensure that mined material meets required grade and quality specifications.
Oversee the daily coordination and control of contractor mining activities, ensuring adherence to planned designs, drill and blast patterns, and loading/hauling sequences.
Ensure the processing plant is fed the required tonnage and grade.
Safety, Health, Environment, and Statutory Compliance

Ensure the mine operates in full compliance with Zimbabwean mining laws and all conditions of appointment as Mine Manager.
Promote a culture of zero harm, ensuring that all mining activities meet or exceed company and legal safety standards.
Maintain compliance with environmental management obligations, including waste dumping, pit slope stability, rehabilitation and dust/blast management.
Contractor Management

Exercise operational control over the mining services contractor, ensuring adherence to contract specifications, performance standards, and safety requirements.
Monitor contractor performance using objective measures (e.g., drilling and blasting performance, tonnes mines, BCMs moved).
Address and resolve operational, technical, or safety issues affecting contract delivery.
Lead regular contractor review meetings to assess progress, performance, and compliance.
Financial and Contractual Accountability

Act as the operational contract owner for the mining services agreement.
Verify and sign off all contractor production figures through coordination with the survey team and Technical Services.
Review and authorise contractor invoices prior to submission to the Finance Department.
Collaborate with Finance to reconcile production and cost data monthly, ensuring operational and financial alignment.
Contribute to the preparation of operational budgets, forecasts, and cost control initiatives.
Ensure transparent documentation for all contract claims, variations, and additional work authorisations.
Leadership and Team Development

Provide clear direction, leadership, and performance management for all direct reports.
Promote teamwork, accountability, and a continuous improvement culture.
Technical Coordination

Collaborate with the Technical Services Manager to ensure operational compliance with mine designs, plans, and grade control data.
Engage regularly with the Rock Mechanics Engineer to manage pit wall stability and geotechnical risks.
Ensure accurate and timely surveying, reconciliation, and reporting of mined quantities.
KEY OUTPUTS (DELIVERABLES)

Daily, weekly, and monthly mining production achieved at targeted grade.
Contractor performance within cost, schedule, and safety parameters.
Statutory and company SHE compliance maintained at all times.
Verified, accurate production and financial data reconciled monthly.
Competent, engaged mining and survey teams.
Transparent and defensible contract management records.
AUTHORITY TO ACT

The Mine Manager has the delegated authority to:

Direct and control all mining and related activities within the operational area.
Issue instructions to contractor management and employees regarding operational, safety, and compliance matters.
Approve and sign off contractor invoices for payment, subject to validation by Finance.
Recommend or approve changes to the mining plan in consultation with Technical Services.
Halt unsafe or non-compliant work immediately.

Qualifications and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Must hold the statutory qualifications required to be appointed as a Mine Manager under Zimbabwean mining regulations.
Mining Engineering Degree or related
Minimum of ten (10) years' experience in PGMs mining leadership, with proven expertise in contract mining and operations optimization
International experience desired.
