Description
The Department of Biological Sciences invites applications from highly motivated and enthusiastic undergraduate students undertaking industrial attachment/internship as part of their degree programme. The successful candidates will join a research and product development team working on the development and value addition of food products derived from indigenous fruits.

This attachment provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain practical experience in food science, biotechnology, microbiology, product development, laboratory techniques, quality assurance, and applied research. Students will participate in laboratory and field-based activities while developing technical, analytical, and professional skills in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties
The successful interns will be expected to:

Assist with the collection, handling, processing, and preservation of indigenous fruit samples.
Participate in the formulation and development of novel food products from indigenous fruits.
Conduct laboratory analyses, including physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory evaluations, under supervision.
Prepare laboratory reagents, operate laboratory equipment, and maintain laboratory cleanliness and safety standards.
Accurately record experimental observations and research data.
Assist with data entry, data analysis, and preparation of technical reports.
Support quality control and quality assurance activities during product development.
Participate in literature reviews and contribute to research discussions.
Assist with pilot-scale production, product optimization, packaging, and shelf-life studies where applicable.
Adhere to laboratory safety procedures, ethical standards, and departmental policies.
Perform any other research or laboratory-related duties assigned by the supervisors.

Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications And Experience
Applicants should be studying towards a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Biological Sciences/Biotechnology or a closely related field. Applicants should have completed their level 2.2 of their degree programme by 1 August 2026. Applicants should send a curriculum vitae accompanied by level 1 and level 2 results of their degree programme. Applicants should also send an industrial attachment letter from their university.
Skills
Eligibility

Registered undergraduate student entering Level 3 (Third Year) and eligible for industrial attachment/internship.
Studying towards a degree in Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or a closely related discipline.

Knowledge and Technical Skills

Basic understanding of microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, food science, or biotechnology principles.
Familiarity with standard laboratory procedures and good laboratory practices (GLP).
Basic laboratory skills, including sample preparation, accurate measurements, and documentation.
Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
