AUTO ELECTRICIAN – ROLE PROFILE

1. Position Details

Position: Auto Electrician

Department: Engineering / Maintenance

Location: Shawa Mine – Samrec Vermiculite Zimbabwe (Pvt) Ltd

Reports To: Engineering Manager / Engineering Supervisor

Grade: As per approved company grading structure

Duties and Responsibilities

2. Job Purpose

To provide effective and timely auto-electrical maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and servicing of mining, mobile and light vehicles and associated equipment, ensuring maximum equipment availability, reliability and safe operation.

3. Key Responsibilities

Auto-Electrical Maintenance

• Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on vehicle and mobile equipment electrical systems.
• Diagnose and repair electrical faults on mining and mobile equipment.
• Maintain and repair starting, charging, lighting and ignition systems.
• Inspect and maintain batteries, alternators, starters, wiring, switches, sensors and electrical control systems.
• Install, repair and maintain vehicle electrical accessories and equipment.
• Conduct electrical testing using appropriate diagnostic tools and equipment.
Fault Finding and Repairs

• Respond promptly to electrical breakdowns and equipment failures.
• Conduct systematic fault-finding and identify the root cause of electrical problems.
• Repair or replace faulty electrical components, wiring, connectors, relays, fuses and sensors.
• Carry out diagnostic testing on electronic control systems where applicable.
• Ensure repaired equipment is tested and confirmed safe before being returned to service.
Preventive Maintenance

• Conduct scheduled inspections and servicing in line with approved maintenance plans.
• Identify potential electrical failures before they result in breakdowns.
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts replaced and equipment condition.
• Provide feedback on recurring faults and recommend corrective actions.
Safety and Compliance

• Comply with all company Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) requirements.
• Follow safe isolation and lock-out/tag-out procedures when working on equipment.
• Use the correct PPE and ensure tools and equipment are safe and suitable for use.
• Report unsafe conditions, incidents, defects and potential hazards immediately.
• Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings and relevant SHEQ initiatives.
Workshop and Field Support

• Provide auto-electrical support to the workshop and mobile equipment operating in the mine.
• Attend to breakdowns in the field when required.
• Work closely with fitters, mechanics, operators and other engineering personnel to resolve equipment faults.
• Assist with equipment inspections and commissioning of repaired or newly installed electrical systems.
Documentation and Reporting

• Complete maintenance job cards, inspection sheets and breakdown reports accurately.
• Record spare parts and materials used during repairs.
• Communicate outstanding faults and maintenance requirements to the Engineering Supervisor.
• Maintain proper housekeeping in the workshop and work areas.

Qualifications and Experience

4. Minimum Qualifications and Experience

• Class 1 Auto Electrician Journeyman Certificate or equivalent recognised qualification.
• Relevant apprenticeship training in Auto Electrical Engineering.
• Valid trade certificate.
• At least 2–3 years' relevant post-apprenticeship experience, preferably in a mining, heavy equipment or industrial environment.
• Experience working on mining and mobile equipment will be an added advantage.
• Knowledge of electrical and electronic vehicle systems.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical wiring diagrams.
• Valid driver's licence is an added advantage.

8. Working Conditions

• The position requires the employee to work both in the engineering workshop and in operational areas of the mine. The role may require working outdoors, responding to breakdowns and working beyond normal hours when operational requirements demand.
9. Accountability

• The Auto Electrician is responsible for ensuring that all assigned auto-electrical maintenance and repair work is carried out safely, efficiently and to the required technical standard, while contributing to maximum equipment availability and uninterrupted production.
