Job Purpose
The Accountant (Tax & Payroll Compliance) will ensure strict compliance with Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) tax obligations and Zimbabwe payroll statutory requirements. The role will support accurate financial reporting, timely tax submissions, payroll compliance, reconciliation of remittances, and audit-ready documentation.
Key Responsibilities
1) ZIMRA Tax Compliance & Reporting
Prepare, review, and submit ZIMRA-related returns and compliance reports accurately and on time, including (as applicable to the business):
VAT returns and VAT reconciliations
PAYE remittances (where payroll withholding is required)
Corporate tax and/or other income tax filings
Withholding tax obligations on relevant payments
Any other ZIMRA filings required for the company’s tax profile
Maintain a complete tax compliance calendar, track filing deadlines, and escalate risks early.
Reconcile ZIMRA tax accounts (e.g., VAT/PAYE/withholding/corporate tax where relevant) to ledger balances.
Ensure correct tax treatment of transactions based on applicable Zimbabwe tax laws and ZIMRA guidance.
Support internal and external audits by producing audit-ready tax schedules, working papers, and supporting evidence.
2) Zimbabwe Payroll Statutory Compliance
Oversee payroll processing in accordance with Zimbabwe statutory requirements and applicable payroll policies.
Ensure statutory deductions are computed correctly and consistently, including (where applicable):
PAYE calculations and payroll withholding
National Social Security Authority (NSSA) contributions
Pensions (where the employer is enrolled/required)
Any other legally required payroll-related deductions/contributions for the company’s employee profile
Review payroll journals for accuracy and completeness before posting to the general ledger.
Ensure payroll remittances are made on time and supported with reconciliation reports.
Manage employee payroll changes (new hires, terminations, benefits changes) and ensure correct payroll treatment.
3) Reconciliations, Controls & Documentation
Perform monthly reconciliations between payroll registers, payroll journals, and bank remittance proof.
Ensure proper documentation for ZIMRA and payroll compliance:
payroll reports, payslips, deduction schedules, proof of payments
tax returns, ZIMRA submission confirmations, and working papers
Strengthen compliance controls to reduce errors, late filing, penalties, and audit findings.
Maintain clean master data (employee data, tax statuses, payroll parameters).
4) Internal Support & Stakeholder Management
Provide timely support to management on tax and payroll compliance matters and cost implications.
Respond to ZIMRA queries (in coordination with Finance/Management), including document requests and supporting schedules.
Coordinate with HR and Operations to ensure accurate payroll inputs (attendance, benefits, allowances, contract terms).
5) Continuous Improvement
Identify process gaps in payroll and tax compliance workflows and recommend improvements.
Stay updated on ZIMRA compliance requirements and statutory payroll changes affecting the business.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance (or equivalent) and a recognized professional qualification (e.g., ACCA/CA or similar).
Clean Class 4 Drivers Lisense is a MUST
Minimum 2–5 years experience in accounting with demonstrated exposure to:
ZIMRA tax compliance and submissions, and/or
payroll statutory compliance in Zimbabwe.
Experience working with payroll systems and accounting systems (e.g., Pastel, QuickBooks, Sage, or similar—depending on company stack).
